Why a hysterectomy is not a cure

Laura Chin-See

When I’m talking about my pain from endometriosis, one of the most frequent comments I get is “Why don’t you have a hysterectomy?”. I’ve been asked this so many times and to be honest, deep down I feel really hurt by this question.

One reason is that I want to do IVF again and the other reason is that a hysterectomy is not a cure for endometriosis. Also, it makes me feel like I’m bothering the person with my pain so they just say “Have a hysterectomy” to shut me up. A hysterectomy is a major decision to make!

NHS UK:

"A hysterectomy may remove the areas of endometrial tissue causing the pain.

But it'll usually only be considered if other less invasive treatments have not worked and the woman decides not to have – or is unable to have – any children."

For some women, it may help their endometriosis but for others it can just come back.

Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for endometriosis (yet).
