What is endometriosis?

This is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. For example on the ovaries or fallopian tubes. Endometriosis is a full body condition.

1 in 10 women and those assigned female of birth of reproductive age in the UK suffer from endometriosis.

what are the symptoms of endometriosis?

  • Painful, heavy menstrual periods e.g. severe abdominal pain, bladder pain, back pain.

  • Period pain that stops you doing daily activities.

  • Pain during or after sex.

  • Pain when urinating or having a bowel movement.

  • Constipation.

  • Infertility.

what should i do if i'm experiencing symptoms?

  • Speak to your GP as soon as possible if you have symptoms as a diagnosis can take a while.​

  • Use a period/symptom diary to log your symptoms (this will help at your GP appointment.

endometriosis stages

  • The extent of Endometriosis is defined in 4 stages.

  • Stage 1 is the least severe.

  • Stage 4 the most severe.

  • By using stages, doctors can assess the extent of the Endometriosis and this may help them to decide on a treatment plan.

What is Adenomyosis?

Similar to Endometriosis BUT the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows into the muscle in the wall of the womb. This makes Adenomyosis a condition specific to the uterus.
