I created this website and blog to document my health journey:

I've had a 12 year journey with stage 4 endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis and Menorrhagia.

I've also had 4 failed rounds of IVF.

I've had 11 surgeries to temporarily 'fix' my painful periods.

I had a complete hysterectomy in August 2024, and went straight into surgical menopause.

I hope that I can help others by sharing my own lived experiences.

My mum passed away in September 2025 from dementia, followed by dad in December to cancer. I am just trying to survive at the moment!

My period journey

As many of you know, my dad died of Pancreatic Cancer on 7th December 2025. He was given end of life care by @compton_care through home visits and phone calls. The nurses ensured he didn't suffer. He also had night care on 2 occasions, and this gave the family a chance to have a break. We were shocked to learn that there are very few night carers at Compton Care for the whole of Wolverhampton.
We managed to raise £268 via dad's funeral, and Milo and I will be running and/or walking 30 miles in April to raise as much money as we can so that other families can also get the support they need during an extremely difficult time.

30 miles isn't as much as I wanted to do but I'm in so much physical pain at the moment! I'm still determined to do a small amount every day!

Today is not only the first Mother’s Day without my lovely mum. It also would’ve been mum’s 86th Birthday. 6 months without mum have flown by but the grief still feels so, so heavy 😢 I found this poem by Donna Ashworth @donnaashworthwords
that resonates with me. I can still hear mum and dad guiding me everyday. I really miss them both.

The thing about grief...
I wish I could explain how I'm feeling, on top of really missing mum and dad, dealing with the estate, dealing with untrustworthy people and a massive trauma. I wish it would go away! The problem is, it won't go away (no matter how many times people tell you things will get better) and there are now physical manifestations of it.

I've been a bit quiet lately. It was my dad's funeral last week and the grief still feels very heavy. It's been very difficult losing both my mum and dad in such a short space of time. I try to take comfort in them being back together.

I'll be back as soon as I'm ready. My energy feels very limited at the moment.

Please take care if you're out in the snow/ice as I was also in a car accident last week. Thankfully I'm ok (the car is not).

Thank you for all the messages this week. It’s a really difficult time at the moment. I’m still trying to come to terms with dad passing away and feel so sad 😢 but I really appreciate everyone’s messages. Yesterday was my first birthday without my parents and felt like a really weird day, especially as my sister told me that dad remembered my birthday and talked about it last week. He could barely speak and I wasn’t expecting him to remember. I know there is a very long way to go with all this grief I feel. I’m trying to take each challenge as it comes.

This evening my lovely dad passed away from pancreatic cancer, nearly 3 months after mum passed away. We are heartbroken. Dad started to deteriorate on Friday evening. We’re thankful that he wasn’t in pain for too long.

Happy 9th Birthday to our cheeky faced “support” dog.
Milo has given us so much support through a really really awful time. He really makes my dad smile.

My mum’s funeral is on Thursday, and then dad has his endoscopy (and hopefully biopsy 🙏) on Friday. He’s quite frail at the moment. I’m really trying to be strong for him but I’m also really struggling with grief.
My father in law’s funeral is in November. He sadly passed away the day after my mum, so Darren and I (and Milo) are trying our best to get through everything x x

Today has been awful. I’m heartbroken that my mum passed away in her sleep early this morning. She had vascular and Lewy body dementia. We’re just glad that she wasn’t in any pain and went peacefully. My dad is in hospital awaiting a stent for a gallbladder blockage and a biopsy for a tumour. Telling him was even more heartbreaking 😢 We’re very grateful that he was allowed home to say goodbye to mum.

I want to talk about first periods for a brief moment because I’m sure they will be on a lot of girls’ minds as puberty approaches.

My own education on periods was very limited, and I blame this for my endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, and ultimately my failure to conceive. I had no idea that my heavy and painful periods were not normal. I struggled on with the pain.

I’m delighted that the UK Department of Education are changing the curriculum next year to include period conditions such as endometriosis and PCOS. It should start from a young age.

This week it’s been one year since my hysterectomy! Can you believe it?

I’m hoping this hysterectomy was my last surgery, and that my endometriosis won’t reappear like a Bond villain. You can see my ridiculous surgical history on this post.

One year on, I’m mostly pain free apart from the occasional hip pain, and having to deal with some menopausal symptoms.

Obviously, this all came at a cost - I had to give up on my fertility journey, and I ended up paying to have my hysterectomy privately because:

A) I no longer have private health insurance. My previous provider wouldn’t cover me for endometriosis or fibroids (that’s another rabbit hole).
B) My consultant’s NHS hospital had a waiting list of 22 months (this was when I checked in June last year).

Just FYI, you can check the waiting lists at your local hospital using:

I contacted mine by phone and the waiting list was the same so the figures were up to date.

Yes, I think this is ridiculous and I’m still angry about the above. I was in so much pain that I couldn’t wait 22 months to have surgery but a lot of women do.

This is really important. I myself had to leave my job because the absence policy where I worked did not include any chronic health conditions. I was therefore constantly hitting trigger points and constantly in disciplinary meetings (like I’d made up my symptoms!). This led to a massive decline in my mental health, and really didn’t help with my pain. If employers could be more supportive, that would help. I don’t know if I’ll ever recover my confidence after the trauma of this.

I’m nearly a year into my surgical menopause journey, and I'm still learning about it.

I’m currently on tablets and patches (changed twice per week). So far I haven’t experienced anything too bad but I have had some hot flushes, low moods, and hip pain. These may not be all related to the menopause though.

I was prescribed patches after my hysterectomy and of course I started off by applying them incorrectly! I also panicked about calculating when to change them.

I joined a really interesting webinar this evening on a research project at UCL about the links between endometriosis and mental health and wellbeing. The research touches on a lot of topics including symptoms (pain affects mental health), inequalities (discrimination at work), barriers to healthcare (long waiting lists), and even gaslighting 😥

The findings of the project will be presented to gynaecologists and mental health clinicians when complete.

One of the scary things in the comments was that a lot of people still don't know what endometriosis is. As painful as it was for me, we need to keep talking about it, and advocating.

This new guidance was published by the Department of Education this month. It details a more in depth education on sex, especially around the menstrual cycle. We've been hoping for this for a really long time. It's also teaching pupils that menstrual health is not a taboo subject. My own education on periods was really lacking so I'm thrilled that this is finally happening. Periods shouldn't be a taboo.

Today it’s 20 years since my older brother passed away from pancreatic cancer. The time has gone by so fast. Of course I miss him every day.

It's been just over a year since we decided to end our fertility treatment. It was a really hard decision to make, especially as we were preparing to do a 5th round.

Do I regret it?
No, but I do regret not forcing an earlier endometriosis/fibroids/adenomyosis diagnosis. I spent 12 years having 10 surgeries to temporarily 'fix' my issues e.g. remove any visible endometriosis, separate any scar tissue. I believed it would fix my issues every single time. Spoiler alert! Every surgery and every treatment e.g. Zoladex, Prostap, Clomid made my periods so much worse. They were unbearable. Every round of IVF made my periods a lot worse too. Neither of us regret ending our fertility journey because it was too hard mentally and physically. Also, there were so many things against us e.g. my uterine lining was too thin. I would've needed surgery to temporarily fix my issues again. . . It just felt very negative.

It goes back further though
Instead of investigating my period problems, my GP put me on the pill at a young age. I wish I'd pushed for a proper diagnosis, instead of staying on the pill, and remaining unaware of the potential issues I was about to face.

I'm always thinking about this quote by @Bloomingwithcare. Yes I still get triggered by pregnancy announcements, and feel a bit cringey at being labelled as 'child-less' but overall, I'm trying my best to live life. I'm really trying not to be sad.

I'm putting energy into writing about my health journey when I can. I feel like I've really built up a great network of followers. Thank you for following me! I'm also looking after my mum on her dementia journey, and preparing to get back into the world of work (it's hard!).

As promised, this is my own journey with fibroids.

This is one of many reasons why I want to advocate for better women’s health care, and why I try to get my story out there. I spent years in severe pain, having endless surgeries over 12 years to try and preserve my fertility, or make it better. Instead, things became worse as I ended up with scar tissue (adhesions), more endometriosis, even more fibroids, adenomyosis, and also menorrhagia.

Along with the usual fibroids, I was told I had a parasitic fibroid. This was only diagnosed during my surgery. Prior to this, it was just an unknown mass that was causing pain and no-one could identify what it was..

July is fibroid awareness month. These horrible growths can cause no end of pain - they can attach themselves to other organs, they can press on your bladder/bowels.

My friend and I went to a soundbath + reiki session with @bluefern_wellness today. I was quite nervous about what to expect but it was a very chilled session that took place in the swimming pool at my old school!! @royalwolverhamptonschool - cue PTSD about having to tell the PE teacher I was on my period etc!
For the session, you were on an airbed either floating in the water on by the side. We chose to be by the side (we were both concerned about falling asleep and therefore falling into the pool! 🤦🏽‍♀️). It was a really lovely session, plus we had some cute gift bags afterwards, I would definitely recommend giving it a go. It will help you to unwind and sleep.

"It's a sad story. Not a sad life." This quote from the lovely Carrie at @Bloomingwithcare really resonates with me.

A few weeks ago I posted about a list of ideas I created in case my fertility journey didn't work out. It was pointed out that this wouldn't help someone who was trying to cope with a failed round of IVF.

I want to tell you that I have been there. I was on that fertility journey for 12 years, and I can describe it as looking into the depths of hell.

My point is that I don't take going through infertility or being childless lightly. If you're going through it, I understand because I've been there myself. I'm still now trying to navigate a different life to that one I planned. I still get triggered by pregnancy announcements, new babies everywhere - I actually have a lump in my throat. I'm still at that stage of this journey. The list was meant to be a tiny bit of positivity out of a very sad journey. I'm sorry if I upset anyone.

I was 11 years old when I had my first period. I had been really excited for a while because some of the girls at my school had started their periods. Education around periods consisted of a very short lesson and some trendy looking booklets sponsored by Tampax. They included a period tracker/calendar.

My first period was light and not really a big deal. However, in my family we never talked about them, especially around my dad and my brother. My mum encouraged me to hide my sanitary pads. Unfortunately for me, my next few periods were extremely heavy and traumatic. I had no idea how to deal with them (especially because of the taboo of keeping quiet). At school, I was told to tell my PE teacher I was ‘on’, meaning I was on my period. I just felt embarrassed. I wasn’t allowed to use tampons, due to the fear of Toxic Shock Syndrome. I would suddenly bleed through clothing, as found when I bled through my sparkling white PE shorts. I was vomiting and I had severe stomach and back pain. I was miserable. My mum eventually took me to the doctor’s surgery, where I was put on the pill. This allowed me to live an (almost) normal life.

Endometriosis, Adenomyosis and fibroids forced me to speak openly about my periods in order to explain to friends why I needed to cancel plans, or why I was too poorly to work. This is one of the reasons I wanted to advocate for others.

Hopefully, education around periods is a lot better now. I wish my younger self had the confidence to speak up about how I was feeling.

19th - 25th May 2025 is Dementia action week. If you're on this horrible journey, I'm thinking of you.

As you know, my mum has Lewy Body Dementia. She started to show symptoms before the pandemic. She was forgetting things, hallucinating and repeating herself. After an MRI scan and several memory clinic appointments, she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Vascular Dementia. It was hard to diagnose because of the similarities with Parkinson's disease. I had no idea that there were different types of dementia. Over time, she has lost the ability to walk, needs help to eat as she can't use her hands, and sometimes struggles to communicate. I know that we're very lucky to have carers so that she can stay at home though. She also has district nurses coming in to check on bed sores as she is bed bound. Mum also has my very protective dog looking after her several times a week!

Dementia is a massive mountain to climb. My father in law was recently diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, and so we're currently trying to get into a new routine with him and his new carers.

For anyone new to this journey, I would definitely recommend:

* Look at the dementia symptom checker on the Alzheimer's Society's website.

* Speaking to your GP and requesting a memory clinic referral.

* Looking at the services offered by your local Adult Social care team.

* Visit Dementia UK for more useful resources, especially Admiral nurses (they may be able to come out to you, depending on where you live).

Yesterday was the Voices Ceremony for Scars of Gold by @mortalandstrong I had the most amazing afternoon surrounded by so many inspirational voices. It was such an emotional experience.

I first met @drlizmurray and @samwestonphotography nearly a year ago for my Scars of Gold photoshoot. I really hate having my photo taken and I was very nervous but Sammy was amazing.
At the time, I had stage 4 endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids. I had been on a fertility journey for 12 years and was preparing to do a 5th round of IVF. I was in severe pain. I was actually wearing a heat pad at the photoshoot 🤦🏽‍♀️! I had left my job because my chronic illnesses were misunderstood and had led to me feeling suicidal. I was also dealing with my mum’s dementia. Liz and Sammy were so understanding and supportive.

Unfortunately, my story changed part way through last year. My husband and I made the difficult decision to end our fertility journey. It was too painful (mentally and physically) to consider doing another IVF round. I had a full hysterectomy in August last year, and this has led to a different journey – coping with being childless not by choice, and the menopause.

I was so nervous about attending the event yesterday but I’m so glad I did. I met some amazing people and made some lovely new friends! Also, my husband bid on my artwork at the last minute, so we took home another keepsake (getting it on the tube was interesting!)! Milo was captured by the extremely talented @naomi_hulatt. He has been with me at every stage of this journey, not just supporting me but also supporting my parents with my mum’s dementia too.

I’ve done it! Finally completed the Menstrual Health Practitioner course from @centre_of_excellence I really needed this small win this week. I’d been feeling a bit down. I’m hoping to put this qualification to good use though. I definitely recommend this course if you want to learn more about every stage of the menstrual cycle (it really helped me to learn more about the menopause too). I’m always so happy to see my nephews. My youngest (Callum) popped in today before he heads back to uni next week. My brother (Callum’s dad) had pancreatic cancer and died while my sister in law was pregnant, before Callum was born. If you listen to my @mortalandstrong interview, you’ll know that I’m so proud of both of my nephews and everything they’ve become. Managed to complete a course. It may only have been a short course but it's a massive deal for me because I'm really trying to rebuild my confidence again. I want to be able to help others but also to build up my confidence after my experience with my last employer, being unwell, ending fertility treatment, and recovering from surgery. I'm still hoping to do more. I'm pushing myself to heal.

I know I'm a bit late posting this but I'm glad I attended this year's CSW (Commission on the status of women). I was nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. I found the sessions I attended on women's health really interesting (and shocking). Thank you @unwomenuk

I'm excited to see what's next. Last year I participated in Menstrual Hygiene Day (because of UN Women) by helping to highlight period poverty. @menstrualhygieneday

Sorry if I've been AWOL recently. I've had food poisoning/a food intolerance so feel like I've been in bed for a week recovering! I ate something that didn't agree with me while I was in Spain (the day before I was due to fly home!). I wasn't able to keep anything down and ended up in A&E on Wednesday but I'm on the mend now, still lethargic, eating small amounts but doing ok 👍🏽 I'm extremely thankful that I wasn't sick on the flight home (only at the airport 🤮).

This is Adenomyosis awareness month. I wasn’t diagnosed with this extremely painful condition until around surgery 8 or 9. I had no idea about adenomyosis until I did my own research.
