What is Lewy Body Dementia?

Laura Chin-See

Lewy body dementia (or dementia with lewy bodies - DLB) was named after neurologist Frederic H. Lewy.

Lewy Bodies are clumps of abnormal proteins that form inside brain cells. This can cause symptoms such as:

  • Movement

  • Mood

  • Memory

  • Hallucinations

  • Tremors

  • Anxiety and depression

Unfortunately, this type of dementia shares similar symptoms with Parkinson's disease and so getting a diagnosis for my mum took a long time. Mum was prescribed patches to manage her symptoms.
