No, hydrosalpinx is not actually a cat but a horrible condition where fluid is found in one (or both) of your fallopian tubes. I was diagnosed with hydrosalpinx in my left fallopian tube in 2020 as a scan showed an issue with fluid leaking out of the tube and into my uterus. I therefore had the tube removed during a laparoscopy.
Over the past 2 years, fluid has also been found in my right tube. However, it has been defined as transient (sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not there, like the cat in Alice in Wonderland). I've had scans with 2 different consultants recently (one at a hospital and the other at my fertility clinic) to get answers. Both confirmed hydrosalpinx in my right tube. In order to have a potentially successful final round of IVF, I would need to have my tube blocked off or removed so I'm currently waiting to have surgery. This is where I am in my current fertility journey.
How does hydrosalpinx affect your fertility?
I was told that any excessive fluid in the uterus can disturb implantation because the fluid released from the affected tube(s) could be toxic.
I have the following treatment options:
Management via a laparoscopy
Salpingectomy - removal of one or both Fallopian tubes
Hysteroscopy to block off the affected tube(s)
There is some more information about hydrosalpinx on Wikipedia.
