Getting a diagnosis

Laura Chin-See

In 2014, after visiting my doctor’s surgery to raise concerns about my increasing period pain, I was referred to a gynaecologist to have some investigations, including a Transvaginal ultrasound scan. This is where a very long probe is inserted into your vagina, to give a clearer view of your uterus. My consultant mentioned that I could have Endometriosis, but also Fibroids. The only way to be sure was to have a laparoscopy.

Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a surgical procedure performed using keyhole surgery. A small incision will be made in your stomach, allowing the consultant to pass a thin tube into the abdominal area. They will then be able to make a diagnosis as they will be able to see areas of endometriosis, along with any fibroids.

My consultant confirmed I had both deep infiltrating endometriosis, and several small fibroids. The endometriosis was removed during the surgery. The fibroids were so small that I was told there would be no point in removing them at that moment.
